The sign says: Caution. Uneven steps. Slippery when wet. Sounds like life, sometimes.

One key for me is to know when to take hold of the handrail so that I can accomplish my goal, as well as how to gain strength and confidence and skill so that when the opportunity presents itself to take those steps without the handrail, I shall be ready.
Happy New Year, y'all!
I took this photo at the Portland Japanese Garden on Sunday, December 15, 2013. I'm going to only have one blog, beginning tomorrow. Portland Oregon Daily Photo. Here's the link to it, in case you want to begin to follow it - http://portlandoregondailyphoto.blogspot.com/
Thank you!

Leland, Lamont, Lee, and Brody smiled as I took their photo because I made them chuckle when I hollered, "Festivities!" They repeated it, smiling all the while! Brody is Leland and Lamont's housemate; Lee works with them. Both guys are their good friends.

Rachel, Leland's sweetheart, graciously posed with me around my spur-of-the-moment Christmas decoration. One Sunday afternoon I had picked up the wooden tray from someone's parking strip on a nearby street--folks set items in front of their houses in the strip of grass between the curb and the sidewalk and intend for you to take it, if you like it. I liked this wooden tray with a divider and a handle. It dawned on me that I could put Christmas lights along the center divider and make a holiday spot in my apartment. I set various shiny, sparkly, Christmas decorations in there, too. Everyone agreed with me that it made a great stand in for a fireplace.

We were all so hungry that none of us even gave a second's thought to taking photos of the food I had cooked--pot roast with potatoes and carrots, fresh green beans, steamed broccoli, and homemade yeast rolls. Dessert--I baked a box of Duncan Hines Fudge Brownies and had bought a small pecan pie at Fred Meyer Monday evening when I shopped for this meal. No one wanted pie, and I sent the last four brownies home with the guys.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-79127940116974444792013-12-25T06:12:00.000-08:002013-12-25T06:12:01.542-08:00Merry Christmas from Portland's Living Room to yours

Portland's Christmas tree proudly stands in the middle of Pioneer Courthouse Square, just feet west of the Mile Post Sign. Since the post points in all directions, I decided what better image to use to convey my Christmas wishes for you and yours, wherever you call home.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-50968950794310200502013-12-12T10:18:00.004-08:002013-12-12T10:18:59.389-08:00Did this happen to you on your birthday, with Google? I've already put this on Facebook a couple of hours ago--Flickr had a technical issue and I couldn't get to the HTML/BB Code until just now so that I could put it on my blog. Please and thank you for indulging my tooting my own horn, repeatedly!

OK. So, I just woke up after snoozing my alarm for 66 minutes because that is how old I turn today. I sat down at the IMac and saw my reminder to enter the Masterpiece Sweepstakes, so I opened a Google page, ready to go to the bookmark. I noticed that Google was a bunch of Happy Birthday goodies which I thought was cool to see first thing on my birthday. Then, as I moved the mouse, I saw a message: Happy Birthday Lynette! I just about fell outta my chair! Then I opened another page, and the birthday goodies are still there and that same message appears when I hold the mouse on any one of the goodies! How come all you other birthday-having-folks didn't tell me to be on the lookout for this? Oh, I get it. You wanted it to be a surprise. THANKS!!!!
P. S. I have already received a whole bunch of great Happy Birthday wishes--thanks to everyone!

Microphones, essential inanimate objects for any live music show. These two, along with several others on stage, served everyone on stage and in the audience. Left to right, the fine musicians on stage in this photo, Curtis Salgado (vocals and harmonica), Vyasa Dodson (guitar), and Tracy Arrington (bass guitar). I stood up on one foot, pressed my back against the wall, held up the camera, and clicked away to get this photo, one of very few with more than one performer in it. I am not complaining, just explaining. The entire evening proved to be unforgettable. There on the right, the woofer rotate unit, according to the Leslie Organ Speaker diagram. One of crew members of the Curtis Salgado Band told me it's called the bass rotor. I read online that the woofer is the bass speaker. So glad I got a photo that shows the spinning; I thought it was vibrating with sound when I first looked at it, then when the sound lessened, it slowed, and I could tell it was actually spinning. I thought whatever was spinning was covered with very thin foam rubber. Before the show ended, I believed the covering was some sort of gray cloth. When it spun, the speed caused the blur you see in the photograph which must have influenced my perception, making me think it was thin, gray foam.
Here's a wide shot, taken from my seat in the booth beside the stage. On the left is the side of that vintage Samsonite suitcase with the duct-taped handle. I took this photo during the intermission between sets--the extra light allows you to see the cloth better.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-75668053333486697622013-12-05T00:23:00.000-08:002013-12-05T00:23:05.325-08:00Live Music: Curtis Salgado and Band at Jimmy Mak's, November 30 - Inanimate Objects That Caught My Eye, No. 4

According to a diagram of a Leslie Organ Speaker, we're looking at the vacuum tube amplifier. I really enjoyed trying to get a clear shot of these beauties. Straight out of the camera, taken with the camera sitting on the floor and held up at a slight angle as I snapped several photos in sequence. I couldn't tell what I had until I uploaded them to iPhoto. I like this one the best and have left it crooked to give you an idea of how I must have looked, leaning over from our booth, setting my camera on the stage floor and clicking away. No one on the stage could see me, and no one in the audience gave a hoot about what I was up to--it was not a brightly lit corner there beside the stage--because the music had grabbed hold of them and wouldn't let go, period. I know 'cause that's what it did to me.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-26557146509506569602013-12-04T05:13:00.000-08:002013-12-04T05:13:22.681-08:00Live Music: Curtis Salgado and Band at Jimmy Mak's, November 30 - Inanimate Objects That Caught My Eye, No. 3

When the band took a break, a man came up to me and asked me if the organ is a Hammond B3. I have no idea, I told him. He told me that he thought it was a B3. We could read the word Hammond on it, so we knew that part for sure. And I know for sure that it sounded so fine which, as I understand it, is because it is connected to the Leslie Organ Speaker. My view of the drum set that Brian Foxworth played brilliantly. That's the rich, brown wood of the Hammond Organ on the left, and a bit of the large speaker on the right. I am assuming it is a speaker. Maybe it is a monitor. I really don't know for sure. I am certain that it blocked part of my view. I didn't care. The music was that grand. From the time we got the tickets, my friend from work Sharon and I had held out the upcoming Curtis Salgado and Band show as the ultimate motivator to get through the days until it arrived. Saturday night she drove to my apartment and parked. We rode the bus to Jimmy Mak's since neither one of us had any idea where to park near the club. We got off in front of Powell's Books and walked down the slope on NW 10th, arriving at Jimmy Mak's before anyone else, not realizing that our reserved seating/dinner required tickets meant an assigned table. We thought it would be first come, first seated. So, we arrived three full hours before the show was to begin, were led to our table--a booth in the corner beside one end of the stage. By 7:00 p.m., we had dined and watched people and talked about what a great time we knew was coming our way. We could see very little of the stage, raised at least six inches from floor level, because a large Hammond organ stood right in front of us, giving us a perfect view of its keys and of the electronic keyboard sitting on top of it. We decided it didn't matter one bit. We were right where we were supposed to be, learning about making reservations at Jimmy Mak's and how you can call after you've bought your ticket online and request a table. Next time we'll know better.
I couldn't help but notice the vintage Samsonite suitcase right in front of me, to the right of the organ bench. Duct tape repaired suitcase handle. I have a long history with duct tape, having learned from my Mama how to tear it off straight from the roll when I was a young girl. For a small woman, Mama had very strong hands. Over my sons younger years, their Christmas included a new roll of duct tape, a roll of string, a flashlight, and batteries. I told the organist that I like his suitcase and its repaired handle. He explained that it wasn't his, that it stayed with the organ which I took that to mean that the organ wasn't his, that it stayed on stage at Jimmy Mak's. Pretty good idea if you ask me. That thing must be very heavy, not something you'd get out of your vehicle and pull into the club to set up for the night. My favorite Benson Bubbler to photograph at night. On the corner of SW 6th and SW Main, with enough wind that the water's falling sideways. And an approaching TriMet bus in the background. All of these elements add up to a photo that I like. Click here for last year's post about the same bubbler, from a different perspective.
Here's what I found at the Albertina Kerr Web site, so you'll know a bit about the center:

Since 1907, Albertina Kerr has strengthened Oregon families and communities. Today, we provide programs and services to children and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges - empowering them to live richer lives.

We're building an army of angels. A community that stands together. Where we challenge the norm to create a society that has no barriers. Where people who face developmental disabilities and mental health challenges are included and empowered. Where families are supported and children have reason to smile. Where everyday people reach out to the most vulnerable and give back to their community.

To wrap up the entire Nature's beauty series, I decided to go with this photo of the Albertina Kerr property that I took on that cold Sunday morning when I lucked out and decided to see what I could find in the fog. To me, it's important to show you where I was for over two hours, practically swooning with every step as I saw one after another sight that I needed to photograph.

The first five days of the series featured images taken at the far left of this photo where there is corner flower bed, raised above sidewalk level and enclosed in a stone wall topped with bricks. You see where that last tree on the left meets with the end of the hedge? The raised bed starts there and goes an equal distance down to and around the corner before the hedge begins again. The rest of the photos were taken inside the hedge, in several well-maintained beds filled with roses or shrubs or foliage plantings. When I think about how many exceptional opportunities I had for photographs in this small space, I am amazed and humbled by Nature's beauty. And I say, "Thank you," to those who garden on the Albertina Kerr property.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-49938123727641832352013-11-25T03:30:00.000-08:002013-11-25T03:30:04.442-08:00Nature's beauty, No. 23

This is my third year to participate in the city/county art show known as All The Art That Fits, sponsored by the Regional Arts & Culture Council. And my first time to make it onto what I think of as the back wall of the space. Yea! There is a wall to the left of this one, and a bit of space beneath the stair railing on the right. I think that if there had been more submitted art, then they would have hung some along there, too. When I dropped off my acrylic and tissue paper on canvas board artwork, I asked if it could be placed not too high so that folks might be able to read the word I had spelled out on it with wooden beads. Well, there it is, at the bottom so that folks can indeed read the word, if they're willing to bend a bit at the waist.
The word: GENERATIONS.

Here is the rest of the back wall's art.

And here's the art hanging on the wall to the left.

Alongside the front windows on the east wing of the Albertina Kerr building is a trimmed hedge--I think it might be some sort of boxwood although I cannot say for sure. I squatted down for a closer look at this dewy little cloud of spiderweb with these tiny branches coming through it. I liked what I saw enough to take a photo and share it with you. Decorative grasses filled a rather large pot on the patio at Albertina Kerr. I spied this triangle-shaped dew drop formed at the intersection of those two differently colored blades of grass. Although I had stiff fingers from being out in the cold for several hours, I worked at getting at least one decent photo of it. This turned out best. I like the lines and the triangles and the soft curves. Concentrating on that particular dew drop, I didn't notice the others until I downloaded the photos to iPhoto.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-887504666175935192013-11-18T03:30:00.000-08:002013-11-18T03:30:00.690-08:00Nature's beauty, No. 17

I certainly would like to know how these dew drops formed as far apart as they did. And what makes them not slide together? Is it the surface tension of the water juxtaposed with the stickiness of the spiderweb? And on that top strand, whatever made those eight larger dew drops form alongside dozens of teensy ones? You can tell the wind blew as I took the photo, but I just had to share it with y'all. Someone may know the answers to my questions! I'm having a blast with these dew and fog photos.Lynettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05092690457095379968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32213247.post-10795102728258465882013-11-17T14:48:00.000-08:002013-11-17T14:50:40.427-08:00Taking a break from the Nature's beauty series to share some joyous family time at the Hollywood Theatre, experiencing "Muscle Shoals" together!

Back story. Born in 1947 in Jackson, Mississippi; graduated from high school in 1966; went to Mississippi State in Starkville until we needed for my parents to send my brother to school to defer the possibility of being drafted; moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1969; listened to various radio stations in Jackson and Starkville and Kansas City. Every chance I got, I went to live music at clubs and at concerts. Dec. 31, 1972, married a music lover named LeRoy--he had more albums than I'd ever seen outside of a record store. We continued those habits, spending some of life's time and money and love on music. LeRoy died in 1983 in Houston, Texas, where we had moved. Lamont, Leland and I moved back to Jackson, Mississippi. I took my sons to as many live music performances as we could afford. We listened to the radio, watched early MTV together, and bought some music. We came to appreciate each others tastes, one of the blessings of being their mother that causes my heart to swell. To me it means their Daddy is here with us, helping us understand each other just a little bit better.

I cannot play anything. I cannot sing. I can appreciate music that grabs hold of me and won't let go. In fact, I willingly allow this to happen from the second I hear some songs, whether it is the first time or the hundredth time. Before LeRoy, who really just about wouldn't dance, ever, I used to get up on the dance floor and get down. Nowadays, I jump at the chance to do the Electric Slide, as well as bobbing my head with the best of 'em. And I fondly remember dancing with Lamont and Leland at their various high school proms. (I taught at their school.)

Now for why I'm smiling so much in all of the photos in the collage. A few months ago when I read about "Muscle Shoals" in an e-mail I received from the Portland Art Museum's NW Film Center, I knew I had to see it. No wavering in my determination--I bought a ticket to see it on Friday, October 11, at 6:45 p.m. When I walked in, I decided to sit on row seven, in the 11th seat, for luck. Did that ever turn out to be the case! Here's something I wrote about the experience afterwards--"Let me tell you, if you get the chance to see the documentary "Muscle Shoals," you should take it. I can't think of enough words to accurately convey how splendid it is. Go see and you'll find yourself feeling the same. If you don't, I'm sorta worried about you."

Several times as I sat there in the dark, among surely lots of non-Southerners who nevertheless loved the music, I wondered what they thought about the word kudzu, did they recognize it for those few seconds it was on the screen? Did they understand what those interviewed really meant when they talked about the singing river, the mud, the place of Muscle Shoals, Alabama? It didn't take much for me to become homesick for my Mississippi because those beautiful skies and landscapes and small town sights spoke deeply and quickly to my memories. Those young men, barely out of boyhood, struck me with such familiarity that I felt I knew them, yet I remained amazed at the chance of the whole thing--they are the living, breathing, talented truth of being in the right place at the right time. Let's add in having the right skills and determination and flexibility and the ability to not be racists, too, in those turbulent times in the South.

Overcome with the gut-impact of deep emotions I had not expected, somehow I swallowed the sobs I felt coming on as I sat there while folks all around me got up and left as the credits rolled. I couldn't move, not yet. I had to drink from "Muscle Shoals," the final drop of the well-realized effort on the part of all involved in its coming together. When I got to the top of the aisle, I noticed to my right that the auditorium's control room door stood ajar. I leaned into the darkness and said with a still choked up voice, "Thank you, thank you so much for bringing that here." I heard a voice reply, "You're welcome." And I walked away, knowing immediately that I had to see it again.

This past week when I got an e-mail from the Hollywood Theatre saying that I could get free tickets to "Muscle Shoals," I immediately started clicking and typing, with a huge grin plastered all over my mug. I got the confirmation e-mail the next day, and both sons, Lamont and Leland, willingly said Yes to my invite. I knew we three had it made in the shade. That we were cooking with gas. That our ship had come in. OK, I'm going off the deep end here, but I do not care. Look at the collage above and see how I looked out front afterward, and you see the truth in those cliched phrases, plastered all over my mug! I sat there between the two of them, patting their knees every once in a while, wondering if they could believe any better than I could that these men who looked and sounded like their Papaw used to look and sound had been the creators of much of the musical soundtrack of our lives. Once we hit the sidewalk outside, I handed my iPhone to Leland so that I could have these photos to enjoy over and over.

I know this has been a lot to read. Thanks for indulging an ol' woman's family and musical whims, reflections, and joys. I know just how blessed that I am, y'all.

About the film: MUSCLE SHOALS - DIRECTOR: GREG “FREDDY” CAMALIER - US, 2013

In a small Alabama town called Muscle Shoals—on the banks of the Tennessee River—legendary musicians including Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett gathered in the late 1960s to create music that would inspire later recordings by Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band, Simon and Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Keys, and many more. Tracing the storied history of this unlikely musical birthplace, Camalier’s colorful film centers on Rick Hall, the founder of FAME recording studios and creator of the Muscle Shoals Sound and its legendary house rhythm section, The Swampers. Along with rare archival clips are the memories of legend after legend—all testimony to one of America’s most creative musical melting pots. (111 mins.)
