Seen Downtown, No. 3

DSC_0429_PM_1

Setting sun accents the Salvation Army building on the corner of West Burnside and SW 2nd Avenue. Down the street, it hits the top floor of the New Market Block, too. I was downtown for an after-work artist talk about the public art installed as part of the Portland Streetcar Central Line outside my workplace. Couldn't resist taking some photos.

April 1, the movement of pedestrians. April 2, the movement of vehicles.

Saturday night, March 16, I first rode the MAX Yellow Line from the Portland Expo Center where I had enjoyed the Portland Roadster Show - yea, Ratty Caddy - and some fine rockabilly - yea, Marti Brom and Levi Dexter. I got off the MAX at SW 5th and Pine, walked around the corner and waited for the bus home on West Burnside, at the stop in front of the 76 station, known as the SW 4th Avenue bus stop.

Here comes the 12 Sandy Blvd., my bus. I've tried many times to get a good photo of an approaching bus at night--success, finally.

And I like how the photo shows the width of West Burnside. Here's what I found online at the city's Web site about the widening of the street: By 1931, the need for more roadway space led to a street widening project on both East and West Burnside. On the west, Burnside was widened from the bridge approach to the Park Blocks. Building fronts were chopped off and rebuilt at the new sidewalk line to add an extra lane. On the east side, the first floor of many buildings became an arcade to accommodate a new sidewalk as the old sidewalk gave way to another traffic lane.

Here's the photo, cropped a bit, just because I am so excited about how great the headlights and tail lights look, how swell it is to be able to read the number and the name of the bus.

Seen on the street, February 16, 2013, No. 5

On this particular Saturday, it rained off and on, the sun came out now and then. I liked how the darker sky in the background of this photo and the lack of leaves on the trees make the buildings pop. Those tree limbs speak to me of summer-time-shade. The buildings are on the north side of West Burnside. The trees are on the south side of West Burnside. I'm at this intersection most every workday, on my way home on the bus. On Portland Trail Blazers' game days, I catch the MAX Yellow Line to the right of this photo and head for the Rose Garden Arena. If you look closely, near the No Parking sign on the left, you'll see two male skateboarders. One is on a bench; the other is standing at the end of the bench and is mostly hidden by the sign.

The large structure just to the right of center is one of the many fountains in Portland. I found on the city's Web site that it is officially untitled, that it has become known as the Kelly Fountain. It runs spring through fall, 8 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Also online, this description: Oregon artist Lee Kelly won an international competition to design this sculpture. Kelly has designed several other sculptures in Portland and throughout the Pacific Northwest. In this work, water flows over several 20-foot-tall steel structures. In conjunction with the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Water Bureau helped to restore Kelly's fountain to its original beauty in the spring of 2004. The fountain had become run-down over the years.

Streets at Night, February 26, 2013, intersection of Burnside and 10th

Click here for a trip to City Daily Photo, transporting you around the world every day.

DSC_0841_crp

When I walked from Kenny & Zuke's back to West Burnside to wait for the bus, the Sizzle Pie lighted letters tempted me into stopping for a photo. Across West Burnside from it, you can see the Doc Martens, store. The tracks in the street, shining in the foreground of the photo, serve the Portland Streetcar. Since it wasn't cold or raining and I had 12 minutes to wait for the 20 bus just to get to the stop at SW 4th and West Burnside where I would need to transfer to the 12 or the 19, whichever arrived first, I decided to walk the six blocks. All of the books I'd bought earlier at Powell's Books fit into my backpack, so the walk was nothing but interesting--photography-wise. More coming soon.

Neons are in! No street visible this time, just a glorious giant boot! No. 10

staticmap_labeled

Thanks to the map, you can tell that we're now on the northeast corner at Dr. Martens. We've made it around the entire intersection now. I took these photos on October 16, 2010.

I cannot resist the chance to say this, "I fell head over heels for the giant boot at Dr. Martens!"
  color_doc_martens_boot_bldg_West_Burnside_NW_10th_BeFunky

The laces, stitching, and writing on the loop at the back of the giant boot certainly are neon yellow.

For you who frequent Portland Oregon Daily Photo, a perspective which shows the location of Dr. Martens, on the northeast corner of NW 10th Avenue and West Burnside, in relation to the Big Pink, for me another oft-blogged-about-iconic-Portland sight. The Big Pink is at SW 5th and West Burnside, five blocks east of Dr. Martens.

Hope you've enjoyed the Neons are in! as much as I have. Thanks!

Neons are in! Once again, not exactly neon, but for real we've got street level matching colors, No. 9

staticmap_labeled

Here's the map of the intersection. Today's photo is of the corner at the Sizzle Pie. You can tell from the map that it's one of those intriguing triangle-shaped corners and/or buildings. I took this photo on May 19, 2012.

color_orange_T_shirts_Burnside_10th_BeFunky

Standing on SW 10th Avenue at West Burnside, pedestrians wait for the traffic signal so that they can continue to walk north.

One woman wears a salmon orange top. Coming around the corner is a younger woman wearing the same color top, just muted a bit. Then you've got the dark reddish orange letters with golden yellow light bulbs which make up the letters Sizzle Pie. And then in the corner window behind the man in the green beret, a red or reddish orange vehicle is reflected in the pizzeria's windows, along with its red neon Pizza sign.

Plus that lady with the grayish-lavender knee-length shorts is wearing a gray top and gray cardigan which match the painted bricks at Sizzle Pie. Her shorts, the man's plaid shirt, and the woman coming around the corner wearing the purple cardigan all match, too, in that they're in the purple family.

All of the men are wearing hats. And at least six of the pedestrians are wearing denim jeans. Cool!

Neons are in! Well, OK, it's just bright yellow and there are no matching street level colors, but who cares? No. 7

staticmap_labeled

Here's the map of the intersection. We're focused this time on the southwest corner, labeled on the map as Pod: the Sculpture.
  color_yellow_streetcar_West_burnside_SW_10th_BeFunky

Who could resist a bright yellow Portland Streetcar in a series like this? Not I.

On the right you see a young woman with her hoop, entertaining the pedestrians who are crossing West Burnside on SW 10th Avenue, heading north at the corner. It appears no one paid her much mind once they'd passed her on the way to cross the street.

I've noticed that the majority of the pedestrians are wearing denim jeans, so that's a sort of matching. Plus those three boys have on shorts. Two of the three people between the brown poles have on baggy pants. And one bicyclist waiting beside the streetcar has on a yellow bicycle helmet. Tidbits of matching going on here.

At the very right edge of the photo you can see just a bit of the kinetic sculpture, Pod. If you're tall enough, you can reach up and touch part of it which makes it swing slowly back and forth, much like the girl rhythmically rotated her hoop with her hips.
  color_pod_BeFunky

Here's a photo that I took on October 16, 2010, which shows almost the entire sculpture--you're just missing the third leg. That black, bulbous shape is what one must reach up and touch or shove to make the more than 70 stainless steel rods sway in unison. I've actually seen the tips of the rods separate somewhat when the shove had some elbow grease behind it!

The building diagonally across from the Pod has been changed, with a different business on its ground floor. You'll get to see a symbol of that new business in a later post in this series.

Neons are in! Street level matching colors, No. 6

staticmap_labeled

Here's a map for you. I hope it will enhance your enjoyment of today's post, as well as those on the upcoming days. We'll start with Powell's Books, on the northwest corner, and then go counterclockwise from there.

color_orange_jacket_shoes_West_Burnside_SW_NW_10th_BeFunky

First up, a man in bright red-orange shoes, wearing an orange jacket. He is walking north across West Burnside at the intersection of SW 10th (behind him) and NW 10th (in front of him). You see, Burnside, whether it be West Burnside or East Burnside, divides Portland into its northern and southern sections.

There's a good chance that he's going to Powell's Books which is on the corner he's headed toward. The red post and railing is in front of the store's main entrance. Powell's Books takes up that entire downtown Portland city block.

There's an orange sign on a pole just beyond the woman who has turned to look south, towards me. Although I can't quite read it when I click on the original size, I can see that there is the logo of the Portland Streetcar. Up the street to the north on the man's right, there appears to be a sign on a building which is red and orange.

Lots of matching colors to be found, thanks to the man's orange jacket and shoes. I took this photo on May 1, 2012.

Neons are in! Street level matching colors--well, not on the street this time, but who cares! No. 4

color_man_bike_pink_green__WestBurnside_SE2nd_BeFunky

Turns out that waiting for a bus gives me some of my best chances to get interesting photos. Like this one which I took at the corner of West Burnside and SW 2nd Avenue. Well, I was standing at SW 2nd, he was coming south from NW 2nd.

I took this photo on March 24, before the leaves came out, so there is no green matching item off the bicycle, but the green part of the frame matches the green back wheel. Can you find the other bit of matching green? It's the bicycle seat, peeking out. And the pink part of the frame matches the pink front wheel. Then there's the perfection of the handlebar grips! He knows he's a cool dude on one cool bicycle.

Northwest Hills, March 6, 2012

DSC_0376p_p_sharpened_cropped_HDRish
Deja vu? Sort of. Here's the same view as yesterday’s post. No snow. The Portland Oregon sign's not lit. Still, that bluish tint near the tops of the hills caught my eye, so I had to get my camera out and take a few shots. I am so blessed to have that camera with me in either my backpack or my purse. Blessed. Taking photos adds a large part to however sane I am at any given time.

Northwest Hills, March 1, 2012

DSC_1071p_cropped_sharpened
I change from one bus to another at the intersection of SE MLK and SE Couch. I'm standing in Northeast Portland when I wait for that second bus. Often I look west across the Willamette River, towards the Big Pink and the venerable Portland Oregon neon sign. The Big Pink is south of West Burnside, so it is in Southwest Portland. The Portland Oregon sign is north of West Burnside, so it is in Northwest Portland.

This particular morning snow had fallen at the higher elevations. The wintry view enticed me to quickly get my camera out of my backpack and take a few photos. Would that I had had more time. Alas, the bus arrived. My responsibility--to get to work on time.

Thursday, December 22, 2011

It's all in how you look at it.

DSC_0524p
Big Pink and a parking lot sign. The sign is on the southeast corner of SW Broadway and West Burnside. Big Pink is exactly one block east of the sign. I used the tilt feature of my camera so that I could take a satisfactory look from this unusual angle. I've cropped the photo and used the HDR-ish special effect at Picnik. By the way, Big Pink is either 536 or 546 feet tall and is the second tallest building in Portland. I found both heights on the Internet, so who knows. I do know I've been on the 30th floor, which is not the top floor, to the Portland City Grill. See views from the PCG here and here.

Seen on West Burnside after work Friday, November 4, 2011

I am waiting for the bus home. I took a side trip to Pioneer Courthouse Square for a few minutes, then rode the MAX down to the Big Pink, got off and walked to the bus stop at SW 6th and West Burnside. Plenty of action all around, vehicles going east and west, pedestrians crossing at intersections. Fun for a person who loves to take photos.

DSC_0533p
I saw the little dog, remembered by darling miniature dachshund Duncan, put the camera to my eye. Click. Captured the taut leash that represents one aspect of a dachshund on a walk--full tilt boogie. The other aspect, meandering and smelling everything invisible to the human eye. Love those personable little dogs!

Seen through the plate glass window of the Goodwill Store on West Burnside

DSC_0653
Here's another photo that I took last Saturday when I was out and about. On the way back from getting my flu shot, I decided to branch out and ride the MAX Yellow Line, then the Portland Streetcar, then the 20 bus. After I got off the bus to walk to our apartment, I passed the first ever Goodwill Store I visited in Portland--back when Mama and I came to see the guys back in the summer of 2004--and now I live so close to it that I walk by each weekday on the way home.

Earlier in the week I had noticed these shoes, so you know how excited I was to see them again on Saturday! And to make things even better, I walked right in and found some paperback books that we haven't read yet, so I bought them and stuffed them into my Goodwill-purchased red Kate Spade handbag. I'm loving living in Portland!

On the street, July 24, 2010, a lavender umbrella and a breeze

DSC_0471p
Sunny, breezy morning. As the woman waits to cross West Burnside at NW 21st Avenue, the breeze swirls around her head, lifts strands of her hair. The lavender umbrella makes a bit of shade, enough to satisfy her. Is she worried that her umbrella will be blown inside out?

DSC_0473p
She crosses the street and continues south on SW 21st Avenue, every glistening hair in place, no evidence of the breeze left behind. Intact, the umbrella still functions.

Neat shot!

DSC_0090p
What a treat, to get this clear, night time photo, with neon and the blur of a vehicle. And even neater, I used to drive a Honda Civic Wagon just like that one!

Links to the businesses responsible for the neon: Buffalo Exchange, Aura Restaurant & Lounge, and Fez Ballroom and Lounge, all on West Burnside across from Powells Books.

Would that the sky were true blue ...

In order to show the trees' true hue.
DSC_0318_picnicked
Still and all, I wanted to show you the contrast between the deep wine-colored tree on the left and the green one on the right. That's my bus peeking out of the wine-colored leaves. The little triangle is Portland Firefighters Park. Click on the link for more about the park and for a photo of the wine-colored tree in bloom. I'm waiting on West Burnside to catch that 15, on the way home from tour-guide volunteering at the PCPA.

July 2, 2008 ... ABC Wednesday - X is for X to the Nth

xx_big_head_just_enhanced
OK, so I didn't plan to have that bottle of Dos Equis hanging there on the left side of the photo. In fact I had absolutely no idea that it was there when I went looking for X photos a little while ago. It was the metal bands that make up the big head, criss-crossing themselves into a plethora of Xs that I wanted to find among my thousands of phot. I mean, I took these photos last October, knowing that sooner or later I'd find a use for them, and here they are!

xx_big_head_sign
I shot this, too, so we'd all know what the sculptor's intentions were, for the big heads--there's one on each corner, a block apart. I got off the bus early that sunny afternoon and walked to the south side of West Burnside on purpose, just to take big head pix.

xx_other_big_head
See, here's the other one.

xx_big_head_pge_park
And here's the first one again, with PGE Park in the background.

I'm kinda tickled with my ABC Wednesday X post--hope y'all are, too!
