Lava Butte Cinder Cone, seen from the trail. I'm very happy that the folks did this: One third of the trail is a newly reconstructed section that is Universally Accessible, and the rangers did a super job on the recent trail construction.
Leland's walking beside the lava flow, not too far around the curve to the left--the curve in the trail shown in the first photo. Although I took this photo as we were headed back to the start of the trail, I put it here so that you could get the idea of just how tall that lava flow stands. Leland is right at 6 feet tall.

The last volcano I was on has quite a reputation and most people past 30-40 know the name of Mt Surabachi, on Iwo Jima. It smoked and reminded me of an old Indian chief puffing, now and then, on a peace pipe but always with the tomahawk on the opposite side of the pipe. You could split a skull right after smoking the pipe of peace with the enemy. LOL Crude humor. But then Surabachi smoked puffs of smoke like sulfur and it was OK but it could also erupt and make the island bigger or smaller if it blew the top off into the surrounding sea.
The swallow's nest looks like something tried to tear it down. The birds around here do not build nests here but go somewhere else to build them. They do bring their fledglings here to show them where to get something to eat.
