We miss all of our family and friends in Jackson, Miss., but Portland's home now.

Monday, November 6, on SW 5th, waiting for my next bus
First, you're looking north, into the headlights of oncoming traffic, including a bus closest to the curb to the left. The granite building with the big windows (one dark, one lit) is the county courthouse. Next you're looking south. 5th is one-way, south. You can see a bus, crossing at the next street, heading west. The bus I'll catch, either the #4 or the #14, will continue south on 5th until it comes to the next block after that bus, where it turns east onto Madison for the trek across the Willamette on the Hawthorne Bridge. That odd-looking shape on the right, behind that person, is a covered waiting area that I liken to elongated Chinaman hats. They'll keep you dry, I'll give them that. To the far left, that green vehicle is a Multnomah County Sheriff's Office prisoner transport truck. Prisoners have to be brought from the jail way out at 122nd so that they will be in the courthouse for their court dates.
