The traffic is on the approach to the Hawthorne Bridge, heading west over the Willamette River. The reason it is backed up is that the bridge had been raised to allow some sort of large vessel to go up or down river. Portland's quite the port city.
I took this picture around 10:30 a.m. About an hour later, it was pouring rain.
These sweet gum leaves and balls blew in the wind all day long; aren't they beautiful?
